Street BumsDosser, Hobo, Lowlife, Tramp, Contemptible Git... ...are just some of the few non-R-rated names a homeless person goes by.In 2005, the United Nations conducted a survey which put the number of homeless at an estimated 100 million, worldwide. As of 2012, the unofficial estimate is anywhere between 250 to 300 million. But that's not what this journal is about. Many of us are uncomfortable with photographing homeless folk because it feels like some sort of exploitation, like we're taking advantage of their misery.... stuff like that. The main purpose of this journal is to invite fellow deviants to discuss, ask questions - maybe even attempt to answer a few of them, so that we can better understand the ethical conflicts, the stigma (faced by photographers - especially Street photographers), and the moral risks associated with taking candid photos of the homeless in a public place, without their consent.Monologues are welcome. The Essence of "Street"PART VThe series of 5 articles about Street Photography made by ^myraincheck and slightly edited by moi* ends with:WHAT IS STREET PHOTOGRAPHY?Trying to define a genre of photography like Street, it implies the consciousness that one definition will never be enough, or exhaustive, or able to cover the molteplicity of its possibilities and situations. Nevertheless let's try to comprehend the philosophy behind the passion for street photography.Let's start stating that a street photo is not a photography of streets and it is not necessarily a photo taken in a street. So what does 'street' mean? Street is whatever background or surrounding, not staged, not posed by the photgrapher. And street is whatever photography which captures, explores humanity, the human behaviour, the relationships between individuals and between individuals and their surroundings."The essence of street photography is the impulse to take candid pictures in the

John Gutmann - The New ApproachJohn Gutmann was a German-born American photographer and painter (yes, another one), born in 1905.In Germany he worked as a photojournalist for Presse Photo, left Germany in 1933, and in America found an exuberant car culture, a dizzying array of billboards and graffiti, a racially diverse citizenry, music and dancing in the streets and young women galore. He especially took an interest in the Jazz music scene.Gutmann is recognized for his unique "worm's-eye view" camera angle, and at the time this approach to angle and framing was not widely used by American photographers. He enjoyed taking photos of ordinary things and making them seem special, like street photographers do.Some of his images predate by two decades the kind of informal, lonely-in-America pictures that Robert Frank made famous in ''The Americans.''"As a rule I do not like to explain my photographs, I want my pictures to be read and explored. I believe a good picture is open to many individual (subjective) associati

Jeff MermelsteinJeff Mermelstein was born in central New Jersey, in 1957. Studied biology but in 1981 finished a internshio in phptpgraphy at The International Center of Photography in New York and began a career that combined personal photographs with assignment work for major publications including Life Magazine, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. He grabs your attention and hold you in that one instant of happenstance which everyone else missed, with genuine intelligence and his camera strapped to his chest."Themes emerge after the photographs begin to accumulate", but sense of humour (fundamental) and people running are spread through his portfolio."…stalks the city with his Leica strapped high on his chest and takes photos as casually as most people blink"-William Meyers, WALL STREET JOURNALSee? No excuses! Have a great day.
Helen LevittHelen Levitt was an American photographer that grew up in Brooklyn and taught herself photography . She was particularly noted for "street photography" around New York City, and has been called "the most celebrated and least known photographer of her time".She purchased a Leica camera and began to photograph children and their work with chalk, associating with Walker Evans in 1938. No unusual photos, but plain documentary, poetic photographs made on the streets of the city she has inhabited.Received two Guggenheim Foundation grants to take color photographs on the streets of New York and much of her work in color from the 1960s was stolen in a 1970 burglary of her East 13th Street apartment (!).
Rui Palha - Head, Eye and HeartAs you know, I normally don't do (features) Journals. The exception goes to those photographers that had some historical importance in the photography World, those that influence(d) me, those that I believe can move others like they moved me, humanitarian photographers, and that normally live in the "shadow" of the same old Features and references.Today I have the pleasure and honor to bring you Rui Palha.Talented photographer and a really good person. There is little information about Rui Palha. We know that he was born in 1953, is Portuguese, lives in Lisbon, and considers himself an amateur. Well, if all amateurs photographed as Rui, the World would not need professionals.Photography is his hobby since he was 14 years of age. Had his own darkroom, but preferred to "press the button" in the streets. The sentence that defines his photography: "Photography is a very important part of my space it is to discover, it is to capture giving flow to what the heart feels and sees i

This is a quote by Josef Koudelka. He was born in 1938 in Moravia and began photographing with a 6 x 6 Bakelite camera. He staged his first photographic exhibition in 1961. Changed to a Rolleiflex camera and in 1967 decided to give up his career in engineering for full-time work as a photographer.Awarded several times, was known for his exceptional photographs, which required an enourmous amount of courage.Nomad at heart, he wandered around Europe with his camera and little else. In 1987 Koudelka became a French citizen and his work received support and acknowledgment from his friend, "
